Buckingham County was established in 1761 from a portion of Albemarle County located below the James River. The origin of the county name comes from the Duke of Buckingham (Buckinghamshire, England). Some towns located in Nelson County include Buckingham, the county seat, and Akunia, Andersonville, Arvonia, Dillwyn, New Canton, and Sprouses Corner.
In 1869 the county courthouse burned and most records were destroyed. Outside of family rescords and official records on the state level, little else remains to validate family or historical research before that year. One surprising survivor was the Buckingham County Surveyor’s Plat Book from 1762-1858. The original volume is contained at the Buckingham County Circuit Court (see information below), and a photographic copy is located at the Virginia State Archives. Microfilm copies are available at the Library of Virginia and through the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. You can also find a copy of the records in the book by the same name, transcribed by Eric G. Grundset at your local library or at a genealogical research library.
Buckingham County is bounded on the north by the James River and on the northwest by the Appomattox River. The geographic center of Virginia is in Buckingham County. Richmond, the state capital, is 63 miles east; Charlottesville is 45 miles north; Lynchburg is 38 miles southwest; Roanoke is 90 miles southwest; and Washington, D.C. is 173 miles north. The Port of Hampton Roads is 158 miles southeast.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,511 km² (584 mi²). 1,504 km² (581 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it (0.46%) is water.
