Charles City County

Charles City County location. The County of Charles City was named after the son of King James who later became King Charles I of England. It was one of four “boroughs” or “incorporations” created by the Virginia Company in 1619. Today, Charles City County is located in the Richmond-Petersburg region and is a portion of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA).

Charles City was home to the Chickahominy, Paspahegh and Weyanock Native Americans when the Susan Constant, the Godspeed and the Discovery entered the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay in 1607 and sailed up the James River. Additionally, Governor Yeardley traded with a Dutch vessel for her cargo of “20 and odd Captive Africans in 1618 and almost half of them were brought to the Borough of Charles City. Therefore, within a decade, Charles City became the meeting ground for three disparate cultures.

Out of all the historic buildings located in this county, Westover is – perhaps – the most elegant. It was built about 1730 by William Byrd II, founder of Richmond and Petersburg, and is widely known for its superb proportions and the finest 18th century iron gates in this country. The major plantations located in this county, from west to east along the James River, are Shirley Plantation, Berkeley Plantation, Westover Plantation, Sherwood Forest Plantation, and Greenway Plantation

Charles City is the county seat. Other towns include Cana, Dugspur, Fancy Gap, Hillsville, Lambsburg, Laurel Fork, Littlevine, Richardson, and Woodlawn.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 529 km² (204 mi²). 473 km² (183 mi²) of it is land and 56 km² (21 mi²) of it (10.51%) is water.
